Bunnies WIP

One of my illustration class assignments: do a portrait of someone famous without painting their face. So I will now chronicle what I've done so far from sketch to under-painting.

Under-painting
Exciting... Hopefully you all know who this is a portrait of. I'll post the final painting up when I get it done. This is what I've done so far in the past two weeks.

Figure Painting WIP 2 & 3

So I realize it's been about two weeks since I did an update on my progress for my figure painting class. Here are the crappy cellphone pics I took.
Added a background

Worked a bit more on the figure
So there they are... I'll probably start color this week.

The Fortune Cookie

So Illustration seems like it's going to be the most challenging of all my classes. My professor focuses more on conceptual and metaphorical projects, which is not really my cup of tea. Exhibit A: We had to illustrate a fortune from a fortune cookie without being literal. I got: "You find beauty in ordinary things, do not lose this ability."

So my first idea was shot down in class (we won't go there), so I came up with illustrating a scene from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (not the Disney version). I figure it works because Quasimodo has a horrendous visage yet a beautiful soul. So I thought that would go over well. Not so much, but it wasn't shot down. My professor just said a better scene would have been a better choice.

Anyway... here's a few shots of the progress and final. I'm not a fan of how it turned out, but maybe after a few more layers it might look decent.

Addition of ink and watercolor

Final after a layer of gesso, acrylic and charcoal
This was also much bigger than I'm used to working in (22x30in). But I'm staring to sound like I'm making excuses so I'll just end with: I learned a lot of new techniques that will be fun to improve on, and I'm learning how to think differently.

Homework Update

Methods and Media homework: create an illustration for a book that utilizes two layers. I chose Little Red Riding Hood, and used gesso as a layer divider.
Little Red
Not too bad, if I do say so myself. Though the wolf needs help. I haven't met my professor yet, so I'm not sure if this is what he's looking for. Should be fun :)

Figure Painting WIP

Work in progress for my figure painting class.
Grey-scale base
Crappy cell phone picture is crappy. I'll get a nice picture when it's done though.

I'm Alive!

I'm back at school, and after a summer of no internet I'm glad. I'm looking forward to all my classes. One project done so far. As I complete assignments I'll post them. So here's the first one:
Snow White and the Seven Aliens
I have some other projects planned that should be good, stay tuned! I can only get better from here!
